Announcement of National Workshop on GIS Principles and Applications
March 26 – 28, 2008
The Department of Geography, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli is organizing a three-day National Workshop on GIS Principles and Applications for the young researchers and faculty members of Geosciences during March 26 - 28, 2008. New technologies have emerged because of this capability - specifically the Geographical Information System (GIS) which is a tool which allows synergism of map data and tabular data in the most efficient manner. GIS allows the integration of these data sets for deriving meaningful information and outputting these information derivatives in map format or tabular format. GIS also allows the organization of databases which have both the map - spatial data, and the tabular-non-spatial data, in an integrated manner. The database is best utilized for the planning and decision making at different levels.
It is a high-tech programme with global priorities. With the advent of computers, the scope of information processing has become unlimited. Computers are able to process maps - both individually and along with tabular data. This has provided a new dimension to information processing - specifically related to the processing of information of the earth and its natural resources. This has opened new vistas in the domain of geospatial technology. New technologies have emerged because of its capability - specifically geospatial technology, which allows synergism of map data and tabular data in the most efficient manner. Further, it allows the integration of these data sets for deriving meaningful information and outputting these information derivatives in map format or tabular format. This technology allows the organization of databases which have both the map - spatial data, and the tabular-non-spatial data, in an integrated manner. The database is best utilized for the planning and decision making at different levels.
The demand for geospatial skills is growing worldwide, but the job prospects reflect a country’s geography, mapping history and even political agenda. In the United States, the focus on homeland security has been one of many factors driving the job market. Another is its vast, unmapped landscape. While European countries are integrating Geospatial technology into government decision-making, their well-charted lands give them little need for expensive satellite imagery. In India, the overall context of Geospatial technology is still in its infancy but is fast becoming a major element of the resources management and decision making sector. In the light of the above, the Department of Geography, Bharathidasan University, with its experience in teaching and research, is organizing a three-day National Workshop on GIS Principles and Applications of for the young researchers and faculty members in geosciences.
Themes of the Workshop
The major themes of the Workshop are: Principles of GIS, Principles of Satellite Remote Sensing, Digital Image Processing, Surveying with Global Positioning System, Integration of GIS and GPS and Applications of GIS. The participants of the Workshop will also be exposed with latest developments and the applicability of geospatial technology in various fields of geosciences.
Eligibility for Admission
Young researchers and faculty members in geosciences from academic and research institutions can participate in the National Workshop on GIS Principles and Applications.
Registration
The enclosed registration form has to be submitted to the Coordinator before March 15, 2008. There is no registration fee.
Facilities Available in the Department of Geography
The Department of Geography has a unique image and map library which is a warehouse of spatial information required for practical exercises, project work and research. It has got aerial photographs and topographic maps of many parts of the country. The Ordnance Survey Sheets are also available. Topographic Digital Data and IRS 1C satellite digital data are available for entire Tamil Nadu. The library contains around one thousand volumes besides scientific journals and reports. The library has fairly up-to-date literature collection in the areas of hydrology, land resources, remote sensing, regional planning, cartography, image processing, GIS and its applications. The following equipments are available in the Department: IBM compatible PCs–40, Advanced Servers–2, Scanners- 5, Printers -7, Mirror Stereoscopes-5, Parallax Bar–2, Dynascan–2, Large format Optical Enlarger - 1, Procom–2, Spectral Radiometer-1, Total Station–1, Leica’s Phtogrammetry Suite–1, Differential GPS–2 and Automated Weather Station–1. Software: ArcGIS University Lab Kit Version 9.1 with five keys, ERDAS Imagin Ver. 8.6, ArcPad version 6 and MVS.
